Serravalle Pistoiese
Serravalle Pistoiese with its beautiful castle is situated in the panoramic countryside of the Montalbano mountains...
Of the old fortress the solitary tall tower of Federico Barbarossa still remains today and the old defensive wall and entrance of the "Rocca" are still visible as well..
Civil ceremony
Civil ceremonies are performed in the beautiful, ancient Oratory situated in the upper, historical part of Serravalle Pistoiese.
It has a rectangular floor plan and on its walls there are important ancient frescoes. The building has been well known since the beginning of last century and has been used as a domestic residence for many years. It was then bought by the council and its restoration was finished in 1997, bringing back the original floor plan and using the original materials.
The frescoes had been covered by many plaster coats but have now been recovered. The paintings were made between the end of the XIV century and the beginning of the XV century. They are proof of the work of gifted artists who frescoed the oratory with "Judgement Day", "Tales from the Passion of Christ" and, on the entrance wall, "Mary's Assumption". The latter is just a drawing (known as "sinopia"), as the frescoes was never completed. Although full of gaps, it appears to represent a "Dormitio Virginis" and an "Assumption", following a typical iconographical pattern in which the apostles surround the death bed while Mary arises to the sky.
Religious ceremonies
Catholic ceremonies are celebrated in the wonderful romanic Church. It has a linear, simple architecture and historical frescos inside. In front of the church there is a beautiful Loggia with the typical Tuscan stones, perfect spot for romantic pictures…
